Hello Parents

It is hard to believe that we are two thirds of the way through the school year! The students have continued to grow over the last few weeks, not only as learners, but physically as well. Each day they walk into the room they seem to be getting taller and taller!

Reading
Students have been reading various social issue books over the last few weeks. We have defined  a social issue as something that affects a lot of  people, such as racism, poverty, peer pressure, disabilities, etc.  We've look at a character's perspective on social issues, how the group you belong to affects your response to an issue, and have synthesized their understanding and opinion of various issues.  Students have discussed and supported these ideas further in book club settings.

Writing
Using a persuasive voice, students have chosen topics they feel passionate about and have organized their ideas into an essay format. They are on display outside our classroom for your viewing pleasure. We will continue with this genre after the holidays, as the ability to develop and support one's opinion is a valuable writer's skill.

Science
We have completed various water experiments where we focused on  observing its' properties. We came to realize that water is a very interesting earth material that behaves differently in certain situations.

I enjoyed watching the students share their learning with you at the student led conferences and I am looking forward to our third term together.
