February 2nd

Hello Parents

Thank you to all who were able to attend our Indonesian celebration. The students did an excellent job showcasing their understanding of Indonesia and I was so proud of each and every one on them. Our unit was packed full of learning with lots of support offered from our local staff. A thank you to Pak Andres for sharing his knowledge of the Dayak people of Kalimantan, Ibu Fero for her dance moves, Pak Gunadi for taking us on a tour of his kampong and Ibu Lily for her daily support.

Here is a video of the dance and some pictures of the day.

As readers we are finishing our nonfiction study this week as we investigate hybrid books. Our next unit will be focusing on social issue book clubs. The students are becoming excellent book club members and I've enjoyed their level of conversations and book involvement. As we get into bigger issues in this unit, they will be ready to debate their ideas on these topics.

As writers we will be starting persuasive essay writing. The students will be asked to take a stand and offer support and examples for their ideas. This is a very powerful form of writing, which they will be using for years to come.

We will be switching from social studies to science this week, where we will be studying water and its' properties.

Until next time,
Theresa
