The students have returned from the holidays refreshed and ready to learn!
Reading
Students have completed the unit on nonfiction with a study of hybrid text this week. This is a challenging genre to read as it requires the reader to be aware of both the fiction and nonfiction elements of a story. Next week we will be starting a fantasy unit where students will focus on the strategies to read this genre. It is really important that the students get back on track right away with their reading routines at home so they can continue to grow as readers.
Writing
Students have started to draft their nonfiction ideas. They have organized their facts into categories and are now drafting these into paragraphs using the voice of their topic. We hope to have these published and ready for viewing in the next week or so.
Math
Grade four has started a unit on measurement where we will focus on four main areas: length, volume, weight, and area. For each of these units we will learn to:
- use appropriate measuring tools
- measure accurately
- solve word problems
- convert between units
- become familiar with both the metric and US customary units
- solving equivalent forms
This unit will continue for the next three weeks or so.
Science
We are making lots of noise and we experiment with sound. I look forward to the students making their own musical creations at home - please check for the note sent home on Friday.
Until next time,
Theresa
