Welcome to the New School Year!

Hello Parents
Welcome to our blog and to a new school year! The students have been busy settling into their new classroom, getting to know their classmates and learning the routines of the 3/4 class.

Here are a few pictures of our first days together.

As readers we have been warming up after summer vacation.  Students have reviewed that good readers :

• take their time choosing just right books
• are always thinking to further their understanding
• need to use strategies to solve unknown words
• need to be a brain clicker and monitor their understanding

To be successful readers it is important that students spend time reading. It is expected that grade three students spend at least 30 minutes/night reading and the grade four students 40 minutes/night. Of course good readers also spend time reading on the weekend.

Over the next few weeks we will be adding onto the strategies of good readers. These will include making connections, monitoring their understanding, questioning and inferring.

As writers we have played with some poetry and completed an independent writing sample to see where the students are as writers. Next week we will begin our narrative unit where students will bring their experiences to life on paper.

In math, grade 4 students have been warming up with some number activities and working on a data unit.

Grade 3 math class is starting where else but with numbers! Big numbers, odd and even numbers, and numbers we can work with in our heads! It should be a great year, stay tuned for a round-the-globe project, and one where we work with watermelons!

In social studies we have been discussing our school's Essential Student Learning Results and how a grade3/4 student can be academically prepared, socially responsible, culturally sensitive and personally fulfilled.
