Hard to believe the fourth graders are now one third of the way through the school year. I am looking forward to sharing their progress with you on Wednesday during parent conferences.
Reading
Students have been developing their nonfiction reading fluency and stamina the past few weeks. Students have added onto their repetorie of strategies to be successful nonfiction readers. Please ask your child how they use the following strategies:
- revving up
- asking what they think they will learn
- asking what they already know about the topic
- synthesizing new information with their prior knowledge
- highlighting key words
- using boxes and bullets
- teaching others from their notes
Students are reminded they need to be reading 40 - 60 minutes per night a mix of fiction and nonfiction(as well as weekend).
Writing
Our characters have come to life and our realistic fiction stories have been published and proudly displayed in the hall. Please drop by and enjoy these stories and feel free to jot a note on the sticky notes provided.
We are currently using our nonfiction writing skills to organize information on our Greek god/godess. We will then be completing another nonfiction piece prior to the holidays.
Social Studies
We have enjoyed our study of beliefs with a focus on Ancient Greece. Students have used their nonfiction research skills to find out the following information on their god/goddess:
- What does your god represent and why were they important to the Ancient Greek people?
- A myth involving the god/goddess and its' relevance to the Ancient Greeks.
Math
We are developing our understanding of division and how it is closely related to multiplication. Students are encouraged to review these facts at home to improve their automaticity in this area. Division algorithms will be introduced and practiced over the next few weeks.
Looking forward to our discussions on Wednesday,
Theresa
