Students have continued to enjoy our unit on freedom which we have integrated into reading, writing and social studies. We have added onto skills needed to read historical fiction. In addition, we have responded to statements about freedom and have used our nonfiction reading skills to further understand the holocust, racism, slavery and immigration. To help us gain a personal connection to immigration, Mrs. Singh shared reasons behind her move to New Zealand from South Africa and the sacrifices she had to make in her own struggle for freedom.
Ibu Lily also shared her family's story of immigration from China.
Students are wrapping up this unit by completing a research project on a famous freedom activist and will be presenting to the class early next week. Students have been given a rubric to follow and will be assessed on their research process skills, content, oral and visual presentation. For the rest of the trimester we will put on our science hats and focus on the Physics of Sound.
We have completed our unit on fractions and students are now seeing the close connection between fractions and decimals. As grade four students we are expected to understand the following:
- representing decimals with base ten blocks
- ordering decimals
- adding and subtracting decimals
- reading and writing decimals
- word problems with decimals
- determining greater or less
- simple decimal patterns
- converting fractions to decimals
- rounding decimals to the nearest tenth, hundredth and thousandths
Next week we will be making the connection to percent and will be assessing our understanding of the unit. Measurement will be our next unit of study.
