As readers we have been developing our nonfiction reading strategies. Here are a few of the strategies we have worked on so far:
1. Revving up - before reading a nonfiction piece, students should scan the article looking at the subtitles and bolded words and ask themselves "What will this text mostly be about?" They should think about what they already know about this subject and as they read incorporate this new knowledge with the old.
2. Using Text Features - there are many different types of text features that good nonfiction readers need to pay attention to, to deepen their understanding of the text.
3. Read smaller chunks of text and then stop and ask yourself,"What have I learned?"
4. Read slower - nonfiction is a different type of reading than fiction and readers need to read much slower.
5. Boxes and bullets - to help organize the many facts in nonfiction, is it helpful to create a graphic organizer to highlight the most important information.
6. Lead sentences - readers need to take note of lead sentences in each paragraph as it gives them the heads up as to the main idea of that paragraph.
We will continue to add onto these strategies for the next few weeks. Please encourage your child to be reading nonfiction and to make use of these strategies.
